Seeing the World in a New Way
My wife and I were watching Impressionism: Painting and Revolution, a documentary narrated by Waldemar Januzczak wherein he claimed that the Impressionists saw the world in a new way. I’d say the Impressionists portrayed the world in a new way but the statement challenged me to see the world in a new way.
Seeing Red was my solution. Viewing the pieces first, then through a colored filter, manipulates our perception of reality by showing us the world in a different and new way. These pieces were created and output as Giclee prints for a Month of Photography Los Angeles (MOPLA) exhibition in 2015. The following year several were produced as screen prints.
Fun With Filters Things aren’t what they seem, a different elusive reality exists along side our own without us necessarily being aware of it and questions the pairing of images suggests are themes examined in this series. Fun with Filters is an extension of the Seeing Red series that further examines messages that viewing a work through filters facilitates.
Dollar For Dollar questions how art is marketed and sold, its value and purpose.
Six different original silk screen $1 themed prints on cardboard, signed, and numbered were sold at ArtWalk DTLA 2017 for $1 each. I met a lot of interesting people, had a lot of fun and raised $212 in sales and the generosity of Angelinos that was donated to Union Station to help the homeless.
Each print came with a sticker of authenticity and pair of filters. Viewing the piece through different colored filters helps you focus on different parts of the image.
